Otto's bottles...
The Covered Jar

(Up to 21" wide by 18" high)

These pots are very sought after in Japan. Some come as covered jars, and some open-topped. This big shape is quite an accomplishment, unique to Otto in fact! No one else can do it. It takes great skill to throw a large pot in one piece and have a good eye for the form. It was Otto's ability to throw and coil-build large works that awarded the Heinos the commission of 751 amphoras, lotus cups and drinking shells for Hollywood's epic, The Egyptian in 1954.

  • small bottles (6"h) start at $200
  • larger Bird's Egg bottles and covered jars: $3,000- $25,000
Matte Green w/ Copper, 12.5", $1600
Applewood Ash Bird's Egg Bottle

Price: $1,200 and up

Approximately 13" wide by 12" high, but measurements may vary

Applewood ash glaze is made from actual apple boughs, trimmed from Otto's brother's orchard in New Hampshire. Elmer reduces the branches totally to ash in a wood-burning stove. His latest shipment arrived earlier this year so there are new samples of this glaze in the gallery. The black spots on the pot are caused by "spit out" from Hawaiian black beach sand. The sand is wedged into the clay like kneading raisins into bread dough.

The Tear Drop Bottle

The most popular shape is his tear drop bottle with a tiny little neck. Always a challenge to throw, it becomes almost a sculpture in its form.

These come in a variety of colors (lemon yellow shown at left: $25,000) and most are about 12-24" tall and 8-10" wide. See more shapes in yellow.
Other bottles come in a variety of shapes and glazes.
