Birds Egg BottlesThese pots are very sought after in Japan. This big shape is quite an accomplishment! No one can do it like Otto! It takes great skill to throw a large pot in one piece and have a good eye for the form. It was Otto's ability to throw and coil-build large works that awarded the Heinos the commission of 751 amphoras, lotus cups and drinking shells for Hollywood's epic, The Egyptian in 1954. |
Approximately 12" high by 13" wide, but measurements may vary, $1,200 and up |
Applewood Ash Bird's Egg Bottle Applewood ash glaze is made from actual apple boughs, trimmed from Otto's brother's orchard in New Hampshire. Elmer reduces the branches totally to ash in a wood-burning stove. The black spots on the pot are caused by "spit out" from Hawaiian black beach sand. The sand is wedged into the clay like kneading raisins into bread dough. |
